A Field Manual of Stages of Democratic Decline and Authoritarian Takeover

Part Two

Welcome to part two of the authoritarian takeover (part one can be found here). Let’s pause to recap where we’ve been, and discuss why the slide toward authoritarianism is now beyond a mere possibility.

In part one, we traced the first three stages of democratic decline, these being the systematic erosion of public trust in institutions (Stage 1), the neutralization of legislative and judicial checks (Stage 2), and the relentless silencing of civil society (Stage 3).

At each turn, BITE Model methods are systematically used, pushing the political environment further toward the destructive end of the Influence Continuum. Behavior Control was used to punish dissenters, Information Control to drown out independent voices, Thought Control to enforce a binary “us vs. them” worldview, and Emotional Control to stoke fear and rage. Layer upon layer, these tactics chipped away at the foundations of democracy until institutions meant to protect us became tools of repression.
