In recent years, modern science has confirmed what ancient tribal medicine has known all along—medicinal plants and practicing meditation can offer amazing health benefits. Plants like ayahuasca and psilocybin are now being recognized for their remarkable ability to treat mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and PTSD. Yoga and meditation can facilitate a deeper mind-body connection, allowing us greater awareness and control over our emotions and stress. These practices have been used for centuries in Indigenous cultures, but even as science continues to confirm their efficacy, the mental health field has been resilient in advocating these practices. Driven by profit and regulatory hurdles, Big Pharma’s reluctance to embrace psychedelics indicates the continuous struggle between modern commercialization and our human ties with nature.

On this episode of The Influence Continuum, I sit down with my dear friend and colleague, Chris Kilham, also known as The Medicine Hunter. Chris is an educator, writer, yogi, and global explorer who has dedicated his life and career to exploring the most exotic reaches of our globe to research holistic practices and medicine. In a world where so many of us live out our day-to-day divorced from nature, his research offers meaningful insight into the often overlooked remedies our planet has to offer and holistic wellness practices. Chris has authored over a dozen books, the most recent of which is The Lotus and the Bud: Cannabis, Consciousness, and Yoga Practice. To bring the benefits of his botanical research to homes across America, Chris has worked with many companies to develop food and medical products that are now on store shelves. He is also a mainstay on radio and television programs, educating the public on the benefits of these underutilized and accessible herbs, as well as mindfulness activities like yoga and meditation to improve overall mind-body wellness. This self-proclaimed “hippie” offers us valuable research into the world of alternative medicine.
