Newsletter: Facing Election Anxiety with Resilience and Commitment to Values
“It’s Your Mind, and Only You Should Control it!”
Many of us feel uneasy about the upcoming election results; please know that you are not alone. Yesterday afternoon, I conducted an Instagram Livestream to share a few ideas on surviving the weeks ahead with grace and compassion. The recording is now on YouTube, and I urge you to check it out. Also worth a look is a recent article in Medium by cult survivor Kerry Kaye, who cited my work and echoed my advice for staying sane through the election and its aftermath.
This week’s Influence Continuum featured David Yamada, an expert on bullying in the workplace, and we spoke about how to identify and protect yourself against bullies. We discussed how Donald Trump is the quintessential bully. I was shocked when, shortly before our episode was due to air, Dr. Phil, who bills himself as an expert in bullying, made a statement saying that Trump is NOT a bully - how he can say so is frankly unbelievable. The evidence is clear: Kimberly Kennedy of Forward Kentucky laid it all out in an article entitled “How easy would it be for Trump to destroy our Democracy?” at the end of which she quotes my book, Cult of Trump.
Regardless of the outcome of this election, remember that each vote expresses our collective hope for a world where all voices matter. Stand tall in that unity, knowing that you are part of something much bigger than yourself today. Together, let’s pave the way toward a compassionate, inclusive society.
In this timely Instagram Live replay, I offer actionable advice on managing election-related stress and anxiety. Discover practical tools to help stop ruminating on the unknowns of the future and regain your mental balance in these turbulent times.
Professor Yamada is an internationally recognized authority on workplace bullying. It is the primary drafter of model workplace anti-bullying legislation known as the Healthy Workplace Bill, which is serving as a template for law reform efforts in the U.S. He also is the founding board chairperson of the International Society for Therapeutic Jurisprudence, which promotes the application and design of laws, legal procedures, and legal institutions that support psychological health and well-being.

As always, please let us know what you think about these pieces or what you’d like to see us discuss in the future. Thanks so much!

Dear Dr. Hassan, Thank you so much for mentioning my piece. Ironic that Dr. Phil said Trump is not a bully; I posted another piece with a political cartoon showing Trump's bullying--using ACTUAL QUOTES: https://whenwewerentlooking.com/2024/11/if-we-sow-hate-we-will-reap-division/
Also ironic is that I often think of one of Dr. Phil's mantras, when I think of Trump: The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior. As I said in my dictators piece, Trump has laid the foundation and will build upon it.
It is hard today, the day after the election of Trump, to think of anything positive to say. But I am a former teacher, so it is in my nature. (Wink wink.) We must forge on, doing the 2 things I suggest: First, post the Truth, OFTEN; it will be seen. Second, be KIND; don't stoop to Trump's level--be a person of integrity. And believe: What goes around, comes around.
With Warm Regards,
Kimberly
Haha now we will see if all your Democratic angst is going to come true and Trump is a Dictator or not!
