When i was 30 yrs old, a senior client tried to recruit myself and several of my young colleagues into Landmark (a rebranded version of Werner Erhard’s est) through an intensive weekend long “seminar”. I was single, insecure, lonely, and hungry to score points with this senior client - prime pickings for a cult.
However, my grandfather taught me just a few of the tricks you mentioned to avoid falling for Soviet propaganda when we lived in the former Soviet Union. First and foremost, be skeptical of everything and question anyone who tries to play on your emotions. I was disgusted and done with Landmark by the end of the “seminar”.
I am loosely familiar with Landmark. Having lived in LA, there were several groups that fit that dangerous cult stereotype. My wife almost fell prey to it but fortunately I had read some info on recognizing cults and how to help others “see the light”. It saved us! I became involved with Dr Hassan’s work after that. But it was reading your books that shined light on the dynamics of the Trump version of cultism. Your books clarified this topic from many different perspectives. I always felt that the vulnerability of people influenced by Trump was as significant or more significant than Trump himself. I am fascinated with your and Dr Lee’s expertise in the areas of psychopathy and sociopathy that influence cult formation and impact.
As a psychotherapist, I have some understanding why the topic of cults and psychology in general is difficult for many to consider and easy to dismiss for both the general public and the “elite”. I believe many people often feel threatened by issues external to themselves that unconsciously trigger internal emotions. As you know, the response to this discomfort is often to deny or distance yourself from the uncomfortable. Of course, this doesn’t help the public, intellectually or viscerally,

Never had access to enough money or stability in the journalistic side to cover my rent and human necessities but it has made me a consuming practitioner of "Continuing Education" beyond the too-expensive for my means "tuition" for advanced degree and\or certification.
I've never had a problem with maintaining interest as so many respected and revered educators, scholars, journalists and investigative authors and public speakers have schooled me at my own pace on just how important this barely known much less understood de facto discipline of Cultic Studies means to our society for so long led via our Pay2Play Political system and Media Industries as well as Profit Maximizing Paper Mills and well-endowed universities of higher education and other Private Equity investment opportunities not surprisingly a regular source of just the tip of our iceberg of journalistic coverage and investigative inquiry.....
I hope and continue to advocate for more stable inter-disciplinary peer reviewed critical studies that combine and overlap such fields of study as Social Psychology with Journalism, Sociology, Media and Government Studies programs, Civics and the healthcare therapeutic popular and professional coverage and regulation (with enforcement) called for to keep the Public Interest being served rather than serving the vested Private Interests of our Military Industrial Academic Therapeutic and Profit Maximizing Insurance and Liability Legal and Legislative complex.
